SUMMARY:Tape Art 2017
DESCRIPTION:What do artists from France\, Iran\, Brazil\, Sweden\, the Ukraine\, England and the US have in common with a roll of tape? \n\n\nThey use it as a medium to create vibrant and creative artwork that will be displayed in “Tape Art 2017” this summer at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum!  The unique exhibition will open this Friday\,  June 16 and run through Sept. 17. \n\n\nArtist\, Jay Walker\,will be on hand at a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday\, June 16 to discuss an original tape mural he will install inside the museum.  Melissa Lesher will also discuss her process of tape sculpture. \n\n\nAll of the artwork including two dimensional images of landscapes\, portraits\, abstracts\, text and sculptural pieces will be created with some form of the adhesive. \n\nEngland’s Benjamin Murphy\, Mark Khaisman of the Ukraine and Philadelphia’s Jay Walker all participated in the “Tape Art Convention 2016” in Berlin and widely considered the first international collaborative showing of artist’s working in tape.\n\nThree of Murphy’s meticulously crafted electrical tape pieces will be on display at OMAM along with three of Khaisman’s unique works made using emulsion transfer on aluminum tape. \n\n\nTape art has its roots as a form of urban street art and is popular in Europe.  It can be similar to graffiti but less permanent (and less illegal!).  As with much installation art\, the tape work created outside on walls\, windows and even cars is created to deteriorate over its lifespan and eventually disappear. \n\n\nThe tape art show is sponsored by the Coral Sands Inn\, Daytona Jeep Rental and the Ormond Brewing Co. \n\nThe museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and noon to 4 p.m. on the weekend.  The surrounding gardens featuring sculptural tributes to veterans are open each day until dusk. Admission is free but a $2 donation is requested.

DESCRIPTION:An estimated 1\,000 men\, women and children will gather at Rockefeller Gardens on Monday\, May 29th\, in loving memory of those whose supreme sacrifice protected  privileges we still enjoy as a nation. \nWeeks of preparation by the volunteer Remembrance Committee each year has made this an increasingly popular and widely respected event. \nSymbols of liberty will overflow into every corner of the plaza as numerous military color guards and color corps enter and assume their positions at the center of activities. Additional groups\, including Boy and Girl Scouts will join them. \nGuest speaker for the 2017 event is Captain Randall J. Lynch\, U.S. Navy (Retired).  He retired in July 2016 after 28 years of dedicated service and is married to the former Terri E. Worley of El Centro\, California.  Captain Lynch and his wife Terri live in Daytona Beach with their two sons Joshua and Luke. \nCaptain Lynch’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (2)\, Defense Meritorious Service Medal\, Meritorious Service Medal (3)\, Air Medal (12 S/F)\, Joint Service Commendation Medal\, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3)\, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3)\, as well as various campaign medals and unit citations.  During his career\, he has accumulated over 3\,200 flight hours in various Naval aircraft\, including over 700 hours in combat and over 400 carrier arrested landings. \nUpon arrival to Rockefeller Gardens\, guests will have been given a carnation.  Final tribute is rendered as they move forward in procession\, to place their flower beside the memorial flame as a personal “thank you” to those who gave their all. \nFor additional info\, you may call Leisure Services at 386-676-3241.
