DESCRIPTION:An estimated 1\,000 men\, women and children will gather at Rockefeller Gardens on Monday\, May 29th\, in loving memory of those whose supreme sacrifice protected  privileges we still enjoy as a nation. \nWeeks of preparation by the volunteer Remembrance Committee each year has made this an increasingly popular and widely respected event. \nSymbols of liberty will overflow into every corner of the plaza as numerous military color guards and color corps enter and assume their positions at the center of activities. Additional groups\, including Boy and Girl Scouts will join them. \nGuest speaker for the 2017 event is Captain Randall J. Lynch\, U.S. Navy (Retired).  He retired in July 2016 after 28 years of dedicated service and is married to the former Terri E. Worley of El Centro\, California.  Captain Lynch and his wife Terri live in Daytona Beach with their two sons Joshua and Luke. \nCaptain Lynch’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (2)\, Defense Meritorious Service Medal\, Meritorious Service Medal (3)\, Air Medal (12 S/F)\, Joint Service Commendation Medal\, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3)\, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3)\, as well as various campaign medals and unit citations.  During his career\, he has accumulated over 3\,200 flight hours in various Naval aircraft\, including over 700 hours in combat and over 400 carrier arrested landings. \nUpon arrival to Rockefeller Gardens\, guests will have been given a carnation.  Final tribute is rendered as they move forward in procession\, to place their flower beside the memorial flame as a personal “thank you” to those who gave their all. \nFor additional info\, you may call Leisure Services at 386-676-3241.

DESCRIPTION:The Ormond Beach Historical Society and the Angels of Hillside Cemetery\, a non-profit formed to preserve it\, will present the first-ever tour of the Historic Hillside Cemetery on March 4. \nThis little gem was created in 1896 on land donated by John Andrew Bostrom\, the first settler in Ormond Beach (1868). The cemetery entrance is now on Seaton Trail.  Original Ormond settlers\, veterans of every war\, and prominent present day family members are buried here\, many with unique markers. \nRe-enactors will tell the stories of residents such as Joseph and Mary Belle Price; George and Maria Sterthaus; Eldred and Sarah Penfield; Joshua Weeks and James Carnell. \nTours begin at 9:30 and 10:30 AM and tickets\, limited to 30 per tour\, are required. DESCRIPTION:Old Florida Plantation Tour\nSunday\, February 7\, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.\nThe Ormond Beach Historical Society and Tomoka State Park sponsor an annual tour of area plantations with interpretative guides and re-enactors.\n\nActivities begin at 10 a.m. with a guided tour of the Bulow Plantation Ruins State Park.\nAt 11:30 a.m. re-enactors will tell the stories of James Ormond and Thomas Henry Dummett at James Ormond Park\, site of the Ormond Tomb.  \nBring a lunch to enjoy at Tomoka State Park on the site of the Oswald Plantation.  Guided walking tours within the park begin at 1 p.m.  \n\nPlease dress appropriately; bring water and bug repellent. Rain or shine!\n \nTickets are  $12\, OBHS members  $10 \, Ages 8-12  $5\n\nRESERVATIONS REQUIRED.
