SUMMARY:The Magical World of Bees
DESCRIPTION:A free and informative talk discussing the fascinating world of bees\, see an observation hive and treat yourself to a complimentary honey tasting! Diane Spoden is a member of the Crescent Beach Ladies Beekeeping Collective\, a group of women that promotes the welfare of bees in St. Augustine and the Crescent Beach area.  Diane was inspired by bees the moment she saw Beau Stir\, a Master Beekeeper come to help a neighbor extract a colony from under their house with his bare hands.  From that moment she saw how bees were gentle creatures and fell in love.  Diane has learned how bees benefit the environment and food supply from the Master Beekeeping Program in Gainesville. During her talk Diane will also discuss: \nThe importance of bees \nHow a bee colony works \nBees in your yard \nProducts of the hive \nThe challenges bees face and how you can help \nComplimentary coffee will be served. This talk is free\, but please register in advance.

SUMMARY:Free Garden Talk - Plants that Attract Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in the museum atrium for a free garden talk with Patty Steman. Learn about our local butterflies and caterpillars and which plants to grow in your yard to attract them. Our discussion will concentrate on which butterfly host and nectar plants are the easiest to grow and most readily available in our area.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nPatty Steman has a master degree in Environmental Planning from FSU.  She has worked for several engineering firms and the US Air Force preparing Environmental Impact Statements and Assessments for various Federal projects.  Patty has also worked with Volusia County’s sea turtle program and participated in the Volusia County and Gamble Rogers State Park’s sea turtle patrol for the past 8 years.  Patty has raised butterflies and moths as a hobby for about 10 years.  She helps with the butterfly garden at Gamble Rogers State Park and conducts educational butterfly and moth programs at the Park.
